Public intellectuals: past, present and future

Resumo

Este artigo analisa os vários papéis que os intelectuais públicos têm representado ao longo do tempo e a sua posição no passado e nas sociedades democráticas do século xxi e do futuro. O título indica que, nesta análise, não são consideradas balizas temporais específicas. Não se tratando de um artigo de opinião, não se apresenta uma nova interpretação do tema ou uma opinião polémica que se afaste das de outros estudiosos. Embora a cultura intelectual inclua diversas capacidades e formas de conhecimento, ela pode, também, definir-se, de forma sintética, como o talento para reflectir, analisar, criticar e exprimir e contestar ideias. E, tal como Michael Oakeshott, no seu ensaio «O Papel da Poesia nos Diálogos da Humanidade», tão bem nos ensinou, requer-se o domínio de um discurso intelectual e dos seus vocabulários abrangentes para os implementar suficientemente bem para poder intervir na nossa cultura, tal como os intelectuais públicos deviam fazer.
