Abstract

Testimony of historical restoration practices, an 18th century painting, “O Cavaleiro da Or dem de Malta”, was subjected in the past to the application of oil based coating impregnations, on the reverse of the canvas support. The study of the impregnation materials was carried out using optical microscopy (OM) under visible reflected and polarized light and under ultraviolet light (UV), gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy – energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDX), allowing the identification of two paint layers composed of several pigments and linseed oil as binding material and also the detection of colophony resin, an animal glue and starch.
