A evolução do sistema prisional desde Carl Panzram e Gary Gilmore até à actualidade

Resumo

Ao longo dos anos, várias teorias foram elaboradas relativamente a como podemos "curar" os prisioneiros das suas tendências criminosas e inseri-los de volta na sociedade. Dois assassinos americanos, Carl Panzram e Gary Gilmore, são conhecidos principalmente pelas suas experiências extremamente negativas nos estabelecimentos prisionais, ao ponto de preferirem a execução à  prisão perpétua. Estudando a obra Panzram: Journal of Murder, que contém a autobiografia de Panzram, e o romance The Executioner's Songde Norman Mailer, que descreve os eventos que levaram à execução de Gilmore, procuramos explicar de que forma o sistema prisional contribuiu para as tendências homicidas de ambos os homens. Além disso, traçamos a evolução da prisão desde o tempo dos assassinos até à actualidade, referindo as funções dos guardas e as condições dos estabelecimentos prisionais americanos. Finalmente, discutimos a eficácia das medidas de reinserção social tomadas desde o tempo de Panzram, e se estas obedecem aos princípios elaborados por Michel Foucault na sua obra Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison.
