The institutionalization of education and Social Work in Braga in the year of 1964

Abstract

The aim of this article is to understand the process of institutionalization of the Social Work formation in the Instituto das Religiosas do Sagrado Coração de Maria in Braga, in the year of 1964. Firsty, the social, historical, political and ideological context, in which this initiative takes part, will be analized, concerning the Social Work institutionalization and the tendencies of formation in Portugal. Secondly, the historical research of Social Work will be emphasized based on oral evidence and documental research. This research is an historical retrospective about the Social Work knowledge, and aims to answer the following questions: why the need of creating the Social Work Institute in Braga in the 1964 year? Why didn´t consummate this project? It is possible to conclude, based of documental sources, that the Social Work Institute of Braga was recognized by the Nacional Education Ministry by dispatch of 4 june of 1964. The project was ambitious and innovating, motivated by the Instituto das Religiosas do Sagrado Coração de Maria´s concerns to respond Braga´s social problems. Everything was prepared for the Institute to start its activity in august of 1965, but the project had a delay of two years, due to difficulties created by Maria Carlota Lobato Guerra, who could not assume the technical direction of Social Work Institute of Braga, and the lack of Social Work teachers, in addition to the end of Sister Leonor Fernandes´ command, who was substituted by Sister Nascimento Serra, as the new Providencial Superior of the Instituto das Religiosas do Sagrado Coração de Maria.
