Resumo

Em 1853, durante a sua estada na Ásia e no âmbito da missão do comodoro Perry ao Japão, o marinheiro norte‑americano Joseph Fry redige um diário com um destinatário específico em mente, a sua mulher. A narrativa intimista descreve vários elementos histórico‑etnográficos das paisagens visual, sonora e olfactiva da Macau oitocentista (alguns dos quais exóticos), nomeadamente as tancareiras, uma peculiar família portuguesa e a Gruta de Camões, representação essa que estudaremos ao longo deste nosso estudo, destacando os principais alvos de interesse do viajante anglófono quando visita o enclave.
